Here's one of the priceless memories we had with Steve: I don't think I'll ever forget playing volleyball with Steve for the first time. It was just after Christmas, 2002 on the fields at San Marino High. Despite his fragile shoulder, Steve was all over the place, diving, swinging and jumping away like a young 20-year-old. When a ball dropped short in front of him, he extended his arms and went for it, diving for the ball as if it were some championship game for the trophy. Seconds later, Steve was writhing in pain, grasping his shoulder. A bump in his shoulder indicated he had dislocated his shoulder once again. The 10 of us non-medical volleyball players stood there helplessly, wondering if we should call the ambulance. Kuimeuy remembered that my friend Gene Lee was doing pull-ups nearby, and called for his help. Gene, fresh out of medical school, came to the rescue and re-positioned the dislocated shoulder. And in an instant, Steve's grimacing, agonized facial expressions turned to a huge smile. Steve stood up, stretched out his arms and looked like a new man. He looked practically euphoric. Everyone chuckled in relief to see Steve back on his feet, seemingly ready to take another dive at hard-hit spike. -Kevin Wang
